Health & Medical:
Certificates of Completion
& Associate Degrees
Students can earn a Certificate of Completion or an Associate Degree in a health care field at a community college. Community colleges provide high quality, low cost education that helps students enter into the workforce in a short amount of time. See below for academic programs available in Central Oregon as well as other programs of interest in Oregon.

Associate vs. Bachelor's Degree?
You will notice that some professions such as registered nursing and diagnostic imaging have both educational pathways meaning that you can earn either degree and be eligible to sit for the licensure exam. Students are encouraged to research both options to assess which is the best fit for them. Learn about how each degree impacts wages, advancement, hiring, and employment opportunities. Also note that there are options for students to transition from an Associate degree to a Bachelor's degree by completing a bridge program.

Program Admissions
Many programs at the Associate degree level require that students complete pre-requisite courses before they can begin the program. Review admission requirements on program websites to learn about pre-requisite requirements.
-
Open enrollment: Many programs are open enrollment meaning that seats in the program are available on a first-come, first served basis to students who have been cleared to register after successfully completing the pre-requisite requirements.
-
Selective admissions: Some program require competitive selective admissions applications that assess specific criteria such as GPA, test scores, essays, experience, etc. Review applications carefully because criteria varies greatly. Students may choose to apply to multiple selective admission programs to see where they are accepted.

Information About Registered Nurse Programs
Students are eligible to become registered nurses after completing an Associate of Applied Science or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Additionally, they must pass the NCLEX-RN exam after completing their degree.

RN programs require selective admissions application and many are very competitive to get into. It is recommended that students apply to more than one school. Research each school's admission requirements because they vary by school (also attend RN program Information Sessions if offered). The Pre-Nursing Advisor at COCC assists students with creating an academic plan to apply to the COCC RN program as well as other programs across the state (and beyond).

All RN programs require pre-requisites which take about 1-2 years to complete. Once admitted into an RN program, it will take another 2-3 years to complete the degree. Some programs prepare students to take the NCLEX-PN exam after the first year in the program to be licensed as a Practical Nurse (LPN).
Students are encouraged to research both Associate degree and Bachelor degree programs to assess which is the best fit for them. Learn about how each degree impacts wages, advancement, hiring, and employment opportunities. Students may choose a program based on where they are admitted, cost of attendance, financial aid opportunities, and location.
Also note that students can transition from an Associate of Applied Science degree to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing by completing an RN to BSN bridge program (usually about one year).
-
Linfield University (All students who successfully complete COCC's RN, AAS Nursing Program are guaranteed admission to Linfield's Online RN to BSN program)
